The reason I ask is a poor neglected rusty red one has been for sale a while priced at $1500. It’s a V6 with an assumed auto, which apparently isn’t as robust as the 4cyl w/ geared transfer case ones. I don’t even know if it runs, I only did a slow drive by. Now it’s only a %1 chance this ends up in my driveway anyways, but my curiosity is piqued. I mean for only $1500 its a good investment right?

3VZE (3.0) is a boat anchor. I saw literally 8 mpg in my ‘95 with that thing. Other than that, I loved it.

The 3.0 is kind of a piece of shit. Only slightly more power than the 22RE, and all kinds of headache potential. The Aisin auto should last a long time if serviced and not used too hard.

If he hasn’t sold it, throw him a lowball offer. It’s an old Toyota. At the very worst it will be cool.

Toyota trucks are tough and dependable.

You’re not going anywhere fast but they are bullet proof and really easy to work on.

The world wide consensus is that the 3.0 is bullshit but we deal with it anyways.

The 3VZE excels at nothing, but other than head gasket failure, it’s solid enough. The auto is pretty stout, it’s held up to ripping 7500 lbs out of the mud on more than one occasion.

$1500 isn’t terrible. Especially if the rust is benign. The 3VZE... whatever... the 3.Slow is a gas hog but is more reliable than many abrasive 22R/RE/RET guys online say. Just not R-series reliable. Headgaskets are the weakest point here, as you know.
I love these old 4Runners. Removable hardtops!

I think the roof comes off. Which is fun.

If headgaskets are my only issues for 167k miles, I can live with that.

They are pretty reliable, but don’t be surprised if the rear main seal leaks.

Had an 87? with the 22r and manual, slow as hell but even stock was amazing off road. Basically a pickup with a canopy and some kind of rear bench seat. Rear window froze and couldn’t get the rear hatch open, that was fun, because then I couldn’t help dig out a Camery elbow deep in the snow.
